Whether you plan on escaping this winter’s dreary weather by hibernating for the next few months or by vacationing in Zanzibar, your long wait till spring can fortunately be livened up with new reading and viewing material by such APB speakers as Robin Karr-Morse, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Raj Patel, James McBride, Matthew Pearl, Anthony Shadid, A.J. Scared Sick: The Role of Childhood Traume in Adult Disease, by Robin Karr-Morse

Childhood development speaker Robin Karr-Morse discusses the repercussions of chronic fear in infants—when humans are at our most helpless—into adulthood, and how these may trigger common diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression in adults. She deftly exposes the importance of preventing excess stress in infants in an account that may help us improve the well being of future generations.

To the Mountaintop: My Journey Through the Civil Rights Movement, by Charlayne Hunter-Gault

A retrospective of award-winning journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault’s involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, this enlightening book begins with the author’s efforts to integrate the University of Georgia as one of two black students there, and culminates with her attending Barack Obama’s inauguration as president. With clarity and candor, diversity speaker Charlayne Hunter-Gault exposes an integral piece of American history, providing photographic evidence and original articles from The New York Times along the way.

Payback, a film by Jennifer Baichwal featuring Raj Patel

Journalist and food policy expert Raj Patel appears in Payback, a documentary film directed by Jennifer Baichwal loosely based on a novel by Margaret Atwood. The film discusses the various shapes “debt” assumes—from the “ecological debt” human beings owe the Earth to the “psychic debt” present in any feeling of revenge. The film suggests that debt is a mental construct that affects all human endeavors, from our relationships to the fate of the planet. Patel weighs in with a sharp critique of capitalism, offering a thought-provoking take on the economic imbalance in our society.

Red Hook Summer, a film by Spike Lee, co-written by James McBride

Author and APB speaker James McBride co-wrote Spike Lee’s new film, Red Hook Summer, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. A coming-of-age story about a young black boy who spends a summer with his grandfather, the film probes issues such as race, neighborhood gentrification, impotent police, and the ravaging effects of drugs and gang violence on the African American community.

The Technologists, by Matthew Pearl (Publication Date: February 21)

In a historical thriller set in 19^th-century Boston, best-selling author and keynote speaker Matthew Pearl pits the past against the present and tradition against technology. When a series of inexplicable catastrophes threaten to destroy the city, it’s up to a band of MIT students to uncover the reason why chaos has been unleashed, and to save Boston. Pearl’s novel promises to be a thrilling and engaging read.

House of Stone: A Memoir of Home, Family, and a Lost Middle East, by Anthony Shadid (Publication Date: March 27)

Pulitzer prize-winning correspondent Anthony Shadid, who was one of four New York Times reporters captured in Libya in 2011, recounts returning to his grandfather’s home after he was freed. In this extraordinary account, journalist and prominent Middle East speaker Shadid meditates on the nature of “home” as he attempts to find his place in his grandfather’s estate, a place haunted by memories of a lost era when the Middle East was known for its grace and grandeur.

Drop Dead Healthy: One Man's Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection, by A.J. Jacobs (Publication Date: April 10)

Keynote speaker A.J. Jacobs, who brought us the side-splitting The Year of Living Biblically, returns with a new mission: to become the healthiest man alive. With characteristic wit, Jacobs describes the innumerable diets and exercise regimens he religiously followed for two years, exposing the often ridiculous nature of these so-called health-plans.

Bay and her Boys: Unexpected Lessons I Learned as a (Single) Mom, by Bay Buchanan (Publication Date: May 12)

Political analyst, former US Treasurer, and keynote speaker Bay Buchanan may be known for her political career, but she reveals a more private facet in this new book. In Bay and her Boys: Unexpected Lessons I Learned as a (Single) Mom, she shares her experience raising three young boys as a single mom.

APB Commemorates Martin Luther King, Jr.

In commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, APB speakers across the map reflected on the Civil Rights leader whose non-violent activism forever transformed race relations in the United States. Though they celebrated King’s life, they reminded Americans that his work remains unfinished, and that it remains our duty to continue his legacy.

Race and gender justice activist Nontombi Naomi Tutu spoke at the 22nd MLK Day Breakfast in Minneapolis, an event entitled, “Building Peace and Unity within the Global Community.” The daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu urged her audience to continue to strive toward making King’s dream a reality.

"We who say we believe in justice, we who say we believe in the dream, are called to be those whose lives, whose every actions, whose any action, speaks to our belief in that possibility,” she said. “We are those who believe that the beloved community is not some dream, but a goal."

In Lexington, Kentucky, social critic and intellectual Dr. Marc Lamont Hill delivered the keynote address at the city’s 40th annual MLK Birthday Celebration.

Echoing Tutu’s message, Ashley Campbell, a UK student in attendance, said Hill’s address encouraged her to keep working for greater equality.

“Lots of people think we have made it, but actually we haven’t,” she said. “We need to keep striving to educate ourselves, respect each other, those of different cultures and minorities.”

At the annual King luncheon in Peoria, Illinois, best-selling author Michael Eric Dyson urged today’s leaders to emulate King’s tenacity. He remarked that King’s steadfast opposition to the Vietnam War caused him to lose a significant amount of popularity, yet he never shied away from his principals.

"When black people criticized him, he kept going. When white people criticized him, he kept going," Dyson said.

Accordingly, he called President Barack Obama to follow suit and “speak up more intelligently" about issues like poverty that affect an entire nation, because, "we are all tied together in a single garment of destiny," he said, quoting King.

APB Speakers Protest SOPA

Employing social media sites such as Twitter and Google + as their soap-boxes, APB speakers across the board heralded their objections to the Protect IP and Stop Online Pirating Acts (PIPA and SOPA). While their methods of attack ranged from humor to moral outrage, their message almost unanimously remained the same: the acts could severely damage the Internet as we know it.

Journalist and media expert Jeff Jarvis voiced his concern in an interview with The Consumerist: "To protect a dying industry, SOPA changes the architecture of our greatest tool of speech ever,” he said. “If companies and governments can blacklist sites for allegedly 'stealing' content, they can shut down sites for any reason. We cannot allow that to happen."

In a January 10 tweet, Twitter Advisor Chris Sacca asked Twitter users to protest SOPA by changing their profile pictures to include “Stop SOPA” messages, lettering which his current picture sports.

Human Business Works president Chris Brogan followed suit and changed his Twitter profile picture to the protest message. He drew attention to the drastic change SOPA would bring about by tweeting, “Oddly, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ are on so we can still talk about SOPA. What if they weren't? Life without social networks?”

Last but certainly not least, technology expert David Weinberger succinctly posted on Google +: “Sopa? Nopa. The Internet is ours.”

In light of such widespread protest, both houses in Congress put aside their respective bills on Friday January 20, most assuredly sending them to a quiet and undisturbed death.

10 Years Later: Reflections on the Anniversary of 9/11

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 upon us, APB would like to take a few moments to reflect on the events of that day, remember the sacrifices that have been made in the years since, and share our hopes for the future.

"I was overseas on 9/11, enjoying a wonderful lunch with locals on a Tuscan hilltop, surrounded by olive trees and vineyards bursting with grape clusters. What I remember most was feeling the juxtaposition of having had that serene moment at the exact moment the US was in turmoil with planes crashing into the Twin Towers and other places, as people were hurting - and they were dying. My first instinct of course was to call home and get there as fast as I could, and being that all flights were suspended I wasn’t able to. I was overwhelmed with fear and had a helpless feeling of being so far away. I was disconnected from family and friends and the country I love, and couldn’t do anything to help - I couldn’t even get home. Once back on US soil, reality hit hard with what had happened and I knew then that our lives would never be the same."

"I was a senior in high school and in my French class when my teacher got a call from a friend in Italy saying that a plane crashed into the one of the Twin Towers. We turned on the TV to watch the coverage and witnessed the second plane hit the other tower. For the rest of the day everyone was glued to the TV and calling family and friends in the New York City and DC area to make sure they were okay. I was in my American government class watching the coverage when the towers fell. My initial reaction was shock and sadness, but then I wanted to do anything I could to help. My friends and I waited three hours to give blood the following day, attended vigils, and donated whatever money we could raise. What I remember most was the unity and support of everyone, which made me proud to be an American."

"I'd been shocked by the assassination of JFK, actually witnessed the assassination of RFK on live TV while watching his victory speech in the California primary, relived over and over the MLK assassination in the media, and was shocked by the explosion of the space shuttle live on TV, but 9/11 was the world-changing cataclysm of them all. I'm sorry to say that the world has changed for the worse as time's gone by. The initial feelings of patriotism and willingness to sacrifice and help those directly affected - of being one nation - are gone. America is a more confused, desolate, and selfishly material society than it was before. What could have been a wake-up call was instead a squandered opportunity. To me, the greater tragedy has occurred and continues to worsen after the attack."

"I remember that morning with surprising clarity. My most vivid memory of the day was seeing my high school theater director's reaction. Normally an easygoing guy - more of a friend to all of us than a teacher - the look on his face will always be cemented into my memory. Disbelief, angst, sadness, and so many other emotions there aren't even names for flashed at once through his eyes. That was truly the point that the reality of what was happening sunk in for me."

"I was a freshman in high school and, at the time, we didn't really understand the global impact 9/11 had and what it meant to be under terrorist attack. It was a concept we hadn't really learned about, and we were experiencing it firsthand. Immediately after the 9/11 attacks, our nation became united in the sense that we were all feeling the same way: vulnerable, angry, damaged. All our negativity was focused toward the people who did this, and the government that's supposed to protect us. It also forced us to depend on each other as we tried to rebuild our lives and recover. There was a surge of patriotism and it truly felt like everyone in America was one big community fighting for the same goal. As time went on, those feelings faded and that distrust of the people responsible for 9/11 was then cast upon everyone else. People now look at those around them with suspicion, prejudice, and guardedness, as if always on alert for strange behavior like we've been trained to do."

"As a fully grown adult I think I have come to understand those hard-wired psychological fears that promote the worst behavior in our species. Humans are easily led to commit horrors based on the most illogical of ideas. The practice of religion is so often perverted for this use that I wonder why the victims of wars are not more active in trying to disempower the institutions which totally violate the single most important message: Treat others as you wish to be treated. On September 11, as we remember all of those who died in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the three airplanes, plus the enormous numbers in homes and streets of Iraq and Afghanistan and 6,000 men and women in our military, spend some time reflecting on the root cause of this 'culture war.' Humans can be led to fear, hate, and murder so easily."

"The day I watched the towers fall I was at work and I can remember thinking that each of the families involved got up like I did that morning - the kids who were in the daycare were dropped off with kisses and lunches, the adults in the building had raced out the door to deal with traffic. "I was at APB working and had only been on the job a little over2 weeks. I remember phone calls coming in from family and friends to tell us toturn on our TV or radio. That we were being attacked. As a TV was turnedon in our office I watched as the second plane hit the tower. It feltsurreal. Like I was watching a movie. It seemed like everyone, the White House, the media, thegeneral public, were just in awe and completely confused about what washappening. I remember it took a while before we were all convinced thatwhat we were seeing on the TV screen was real. And once that realizationstruck, then the fear set in. The fear that there was more to come. And, sadly,moment by moment the news of other plane crashes were reported. More fear... So many lives lost that day and families andfriends forever affected. The lives of military and civilians lost in the warsthat resulted, and the ghosts that continue to haunt our view of Muslims andacceptance of all. I did not lose anyone close to me on 9/11 or in thewars that followed. But I will bow my head on 9/11 and say a prayer forall those who lost their lives and lost loved ones, and for the future of ournation and world, because on one thing I hope we can someday all agree: Life isprecious. "I was driving to work, and my colleague was in the car in front of me. I heard a caller on a radio program casually describe the crash from high up on the other tower at WTC. My colleague and I rushed up to our offices, and since I was the only person with a TV with reception, my office was packed with people as we watched the second plane hit. I was flooded with the spectrum of thoughts and emotions. When the first building came down, I started shaking and broke down. I kept thinking about that guy in the top floors of the second tower... We are now a less trusting and somewhat meaner society. Yet it forced Americans out of our country-centric thinking and forced us to all confront the world in a way that we had not since World War II. It is my hope that people will see that we must all be open to each other if we are to solve our global problems."

"I was a junior in high school. When the first plane hit I was in my US history class, and the assistant principal came in and pulled my teacher out of the room to tell her something. She did not return, and he went on to tell us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, and he believed it was the tower that our teacher's son worked in. (We later found out that he had been at a meeting in a different part of town.) Minutes later she came running back in to say that another plane had hit. That's when we first realized that this was not an accident. I can remember initial feelings of incredible bewilderment, disbelief and, eventually, fear... The rest of the day students wandered from class to class watching the news and listening to the radio. At that time there were so many conflicting reports - I can remember sitting in the computer lab with a friend of mine listening to the radio. They were reporting that it was possible that there were 10 hijacked planes in the air at the time, and my friend looked at me and said, 'I feel like we are living in a movie right now.' It was so surreal."

"9/11 was the second day of school of my sophomore year. At the time, my high school was undergoing a major renovation and they pushed back the start date to complete as much as possible. It was second period when the Principal came on the loud speaker and said that a plane had just crashed into one of the twin towers. After the announcement, class was to continue as normal. Teachers didn’t turn on the TVs in class, so I really didn’t understand the impact that this would cause. After the second plane crashed into the towers all concerned students were allowed to go to the guidance office to speak with their families. It wasn’t until I went home for the day that I saw what was going on and could grasp the magnitude of what had happened. From that day on you knew life would be forever changed."

"I had just put my sons on the school bus and walked into the kitchen to see the images of smoke pouring out of the first tower on The Today Show. Matt Lauer was saying that a plane had hit it and I remember thinking it was probably a private jet out of Teterboro, because I think one had flown too close to the city not long before. Then they ran video of what was clearly a commercial plane. I immediately called my mother to tell her to turn on her TV, because she and my stepfather had been married at Windows on the World and it was so creepy to now see the building on fire. I then called the office of a friend who travels all the time to make sure he wasn’t on the plane because his in-laws had been tragically killed in a plane crash and I was worried about his wife and family. Thank God he wasn’t, but I later learned that someone from my town was. I couldn’t take my eyes off the television all day. When the towers started falling later in the day I remember dropping to my knees in disbelief. When I put my three kids to bed that night I felt so sad for them living in a world where this could happen and knowing that it would never be the same."

"It was my second day as News Director of a radio station on the 27th floor of the Prudential Tower in Boston. By ten a.m. we all heard the news that the terrorists flew from Portland, Maine, through Boston and on to New York, and there was little as frightening at that point as standing on one of the upper floors of one of the only two skyscrapers in Boston, wondering if, in the next few moments, we were next. When the first plane hit, I phoned a friend in New York and told him to look out the window. He had been sleeping when the first plane hit and as soon as he looked out the window he shouted 'Fireball!' as the second plane smashed into the remaining tower. Everyone stood in the conference room in front of a large television and cried as we realized the United States had just gone to war."

"I was on the 43rd floor of the Prudential Building in Boston working as a travel agent, and we had several hundred passengers in the air. We had to carry boxes full of paper itineraries down 43 flights of stairs when our building was evacuated as a precaution. It was a very scary day. We spent the next week trying to locate our travelers - as the flights were grounded immediately we had no idea where anyone was. Because the airports and trains were grounded, we rented and even purchased cars for folks to get home to family and loved ones. I remember feeling every emotion that day. I was scared, mad, and very sad. So many innocent lives taken away. Today it still makes me sad to think about. I hope no one ever forgets the price we pay for freedom and the men and women that serve and protect all Americans each and every day."

Time Passes, Time Heals: The 10th Anniversary of 9/11

We look ahead to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 as a day of somber national reflection. However, through this grave time, APB speakers have also found strength and inspiration. We have compiled some of their applicable thoughts and writings in this special blog post – the first in a series commemorating the upcoming anniversary of 9/11.

Gail Sheehy: Living with Hope for the Future

Author and literary journalist Gail Sheehy spent almost two years with residents in a town hard hit by 9/11. She writes about this moving and educational experience in her book Passages in Caregiving. "We as Americans are faced with a profound national passage," she writes. "Each of us has to confront the fact that we too as Americans now live in a world of horror and simultaneously we must go on living with hope, faith in the future, and freedom. That is an existential passage that every single one of us has to find our way through." That is exactly how this year’s anniversary will be commemorated, with hope and faith in the future.

Nick Kristof: Angels from the Rubble

Human rights advocate and reporter, Nicholas D. Kristof, found some people have dealt with the 9/11 devastations with inspiring organizations of education and development, and poverty-alleviation projects. In his article "9/11 Unleashed Their Better Angels," he addresses that "in times of fear and darkness, we tend to suppress the better angels of our nature. Instead, [others] unleashed theirs." He speaks of these humanitarian efforts as reflections of how moral and mental toughness can truly chip away at terrorism.

Jamie Lee Curtis: Channeling Tragedy into Greater Good

The positive spirit and sense of national pride that followed the attacks will surely be reawakened during this anniversary. Playing a part in channeling tragedy into an opportunity for good is actress and speaker Jamie Lee Curtis, who has joined the advisory committee for the Brooke Jackman Foundation. The foundation, which awards grants for literacy programs and distributes backpacks filled with books, was inspired by Brooke Jackman, who had a strong interest in helping children and lost her life during the 9/11 attacks.

Shirin Ebadi: Becoming Better

Nobel Peace Laureate and activist Shirin Ebadi will be speaking in the Second Global Conference on World’s Religions After 9/11, which aims to bring together religions of the world to address global issues, in the hope that this will help all of us become better human beings.

Herman Boone: Motivating Youth to Spark Change

You don’t have to be an adult to inspire. Volunteers ages 13-19 gathered for The Big Event, a community service program which last year honored the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Retired state championship coach and motivational speaker Herman Boone was the VIP speaker for the event. Pointing out that the volunteers' attendance represented the power of the 9/11 National Day of Service, Coach Boone drove home the message that "Volunteering gives you a chance to change things. You might not be able to donate money, but you can donate time."

We will always remember the tragic events of 9/11 with sadness, but these amazing individuals remind us that we must also harness our shared national spirit of faith and fortitude to look ahead to our future.

Robin D.G. Kelley and APB at NCORE 2011

APB is proud to be a part of the 24th Annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE), going on now in San Francisco, California!

Among the many distinguished speakers at NCORE this year is Robin D.G. Kelley, who will keynote the final day of the conference on June 4th. An author, historian, and APB speaker, Kelley offers insights into how racial issues and higher education institutions have coevolved since the first NCORE conference in 1988 (to learn more about NCORE, see below). His background, knowledge, and experiences at some of America’s highest learning institutions give him a unique perspective on ethnic and racial issues for him to share, and his address is sure to acknowledge many of NCORE’s triumphs and challenges. Kelley’s speech topic, "New Ways of Seeing, New Ways of Being: Building a Post-Racist Society," is a perfect fit for the final day of the conference as it will encourage the audience to continue to strive for better race relations and focus on a future of diversity and acceptance.

APB will be at the conference to help attendees learn how they can apply the messages from NCORE to their next campus event. All About NCORE

In 1988, The Southwest Center for Human Relations Studies created the first National Conference on Race and Ethnicity to address the reappearance and rise of racist incidents within institutions of higher education. Continuing their focus on promoting stronger ethnic and racial relations on campus, NCORE has evolved into a multicultural forum where institutions of many different backgrounds can come together and share strategies on cross-cultural communication and development. APB is proud to be in attendance at this year’s conference to further support improvements within ethnic and racial relations on campuses.

Crisis Communication: After bin Laden's Death, a Missed Opportunity? An Opinion Piece by Jason Recher & Doug McMarlin

What follows is an opinion piece from APB speakers Jason Recher & Doug McMarlin, conservative political strategists and former White House Aides to President George W. Bush, explaining their reaction to the announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden.

The capture and death of Osama bin Laden provided President Obama with a bullhorn moment. However, it resulted in a missed opportunity to pull the nation together. There were too many entities having too little information and speculating on aspects of the operation about which they were not accurately informed. The end result was a muddied stream of information that continues to raise questions and speculation.

The communication strategy lacked a concise and unified thread that connected to the larger Global War on Terror and, most importantly, the individual aspects that spoke to the personal chapters that have played out in our lives for over a decade. The strategy ignored the thousands of brave individuals who were murdered by the despicable actions of an individual and his organization and focused too closely on the decisions of a single person that accomplished what our country has for so long needed to achieve. The critical failure in the message was the inability to form the larger picture and tie it to the national recollection.

The result of the military action was an unmitigated success and achieved an unfinished and required goal. It justified those that gave their lives so that America would remain free of terror, but fell flat conveying to the world the anguish and personal hardship that created the lost American generation.

The connection to brave souls like flight attendant Betty Ong, whose steady voice in the last minutes of her life brought a nation firsthand to the final minutes of our innocence, began the story that will never be finished. She gave us, in those final words, the ability to avenge the tragedy that befell a nation. The death of bin Laden closes one chapter, but in no means ends the story of that tragic day.

The opportunity to connect was squandered by the failure to specifically encapsulate the enormity of what had occurred and tap into the national psyche and lead, not only through strength, but through the emotional patriotism that binds us all. These feelings have lived though the initial destruction, ongoing wars, and will always continue. The rare opportunity to place a period at the end of a tragic story on a clear September morning was missed through a lack of crisis and communication management.

The thousands murdered and the millions affected were owed more than what was put forth as a military operation. Our nation's leadership and military accomplished an extraordinary feat ten years in the making. Preempting news television, re-staging remarks, and failing to grasp the full spectrum of impact demonstrated a lack of national communication that must be present with issues of this magnitude.

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

In October 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution designating the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States - a celebration that was extended to the full month in 1990, when President George H.W. Bush announced May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Celebrated with community festivals, government-sponsored activities, and educational programs for students, this year's theme is "Leadership to Meet the Challenge of a Changing World." Among the thousands of diverse and dynamic speakers on APB's roster are many prominent Asian speakers who fit this year's theme of leadership in a changing world.

The first Asian American reporter to win a Pulitzer Prize, Sheryl WuDunn is a best-selling author and well-known lecturer. She is co-author of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, Thunder from the East, and China Wakes. WuDunn is recognized for vocalizing women's worldwide issues and issues in China. In the Fall, she will be co-teaching a global affairs course focused on China.

Juju Chang is a news anchor for ABC's Good Morning America and special correspondent for 20/20 and Nightline. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a founding board member of the Korean American Community Foundation, Chang speaks on a wide variety of local and global issues, including politics, environmental disasters, gender equality concerns, and headlining news.

Eric Liu inspires his audiences everywhere as a passionate leader, educator, and author. The Accidental Asian: Notes of a Native Speaker - his book about race, identity, and assimilation - was a New York Times Notable Book. Liu motivates new possibilities amongst all his listeners as he discusses politics, media, global affairs, business, and American identity.

Asian speaker and astronaut Leroy Chiao is involved in several education enterprises. With much experience from his own life, Chiao is an important speaker on issues surrounding diversity, education, and global relations. He is also an active consultant and speaker of motivation and teamwork.

Dr. Michio Kaku is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of science and a distinguished lecturer on scientific issues. He often keynotes major business conferences in computers, finance, banking, and commerce.

Stanford University graduate Tess Gerritsen is an internationally best-selling author. Gerritsen is a renowned health and literary speaker, and is the author of award-winning books such as Harvest (1996) and The Surgeon (2001).

Working to Solve the Bullying Epidemic

From the school shootings at Virginia Tech to teen suicides across the country, bullying remains a pressing issue in today's world. Even worse is the fact that—due to the popularity of social media and the internet—kids are now being bulling in their own homes. While acts of bulling are unconscionable, they can also been used as an opportunity to facilitate open dialogue about bullying. It is only with active discussions and policy changes that this behavioral epidemic will finally be put to rest.

To help enact change, APB offers a wide range of speakers on bullying, including author and bullying expert Rosalind Wiseman, psychologist and expert on school crises Scott Poland, New York Times best-selling author Rachel Simmons, and renowned psychologist William Pollack. Covering topics from cyber-bulling to child development, each of these speakers offers a way to help increase self-esteem, encourage communication, and help target the root of bullying.

Earth Day, Every Day

Earth Day is less than a week away but that doesn’t mean APB’s environmental speakers are waiting to make a change. Check out what just a few of them have been doing over the past few months:

Author, eco-feminist, and speaker on the environmental Vandana Shiva is calling for a reduction in genetically engineered food and an increase in local organic farming. Industrial agriculture uses fossil fuels, chemical fertilizers, and factories which produce carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and methane as byproducts. The benefits of more organic farming not only reduce greenhouse gasses but also water use and crop failure. While manufacturers claim the benefits outweigh the risks, Shiva disagrees, saying, “Genetically engineered food and industrial agriculture won't save us from climate change, droughts and food insecurity. In fact, it's just the opposite.”

Eco-model Summer Rayne Oakes took part in the Uniform Project’s ‘Pilot Project’ challenge by wearing the same black dress for the entire month of March. The goal of the Uniform Project is to create awareness for more ethical fashion while at the same time reducing consumption. A daily blog covered each day’s outfit, including photos and thoughts from the model and activist. In addition, Oakes’ dress and accessories are available for purchase online; the proceeds of each purchase will be donated to Charity: Water.

A former advisor on green jobs to President Obama and a best-selling author, Van Jones continues to spread his belief that economic growth and green technologies go hand in hand. In an interview with the Colorado Springs Independent, Jones explained how the green energy sector has already created 126,000 jobs in the wind and solar sectors, surpassing the 80,000 jobs in coal mining. He went on to criticize the $20 billion a year spent to subsidize the oil industry, saying, “It’s time to let the oil companies pay their own way.” As a speaker on Earth Day, Jones closed the interview by stating that he hopes people walk away from his talks with “respect for the earth, respect for the environment, and respect for future generations.”

An award-winning filmmaker, Earth Day speaker, global advocate on water issues, Alexandra Cousteau was recently chosen as one of the World Economic Forum’s Forum of Young Global Leaders’ class of 2011. Comprised of 190 young people from 65 countries, the 2011 class includes young leaders in all areas of society including business, the arts, government, and media. The Young Global Leaders work closely with the World Economic forum to help shape a better global future. (P.S. Cousteau was joined by fellow APB speaker Rye Barcott, who was also named to the Forum for his work as a social entrepreneur.)

Former presidential candidate and consumer advocate Ralph Nade r continues to advocate for social and environmental change as an Earth Day keynote speaker. He recently spoke to the Free Press on a variety of issues, including Japan and renewable energy. Nader highlighted the increased dangers of nuclear energy due to the recent disaster in Japan. He urged the Obama administration not to ignore the lessons of Japan and to “recognize that not all energy sources are the same and that renewable energy and energy conservation are overwhelmingly the priority ways to go.”

Speak Up & Speak Out! Domestic Violence Speakers at APB

Domestic violence should never happen to anyone but it does, especially to women. And the worst part is that many don’t even know they are a victim of domestic violence. Many believe that they can’t do anything to protect themselves, that they can’t escape, that no one would believe them and that it is most likely their fault. It is shocking to reveal that one in four women have experienced violence by a current or former significant other at some point in her life and that, in 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated approximately two million injuries were caused by domestic violence each year. You see it everywhere, even among celebrities – Chris Brown in February of 2009, Charlie Sheen in December of 2009, and Mel Gibson just last month.

In an effort to increase domestic violence awareness, APB has dedicated a page to domestic violence speakers. These speakers, including actress Robin Givens, radio host and former BET personality Free, Judge Marilyn Milian, and author Victor Rivas Rivers, share their stories and try to encourage a call to action among audiences against domestic violence.

Today is World Health Day!

Celebrated every April 7th, World Health Day is used to celebrate the World Health Organization’s founding as well as to bring recognition to a health issue of global importance. This year’s theme, antimicrobial resistance, is aimed at preventing the growth of drug resistant bacteria. While each year’s theme calls attention to a specific issue, World Health Day also acts as a time for individuals to evaluate their own health. To help celebrate this day we would like to highlight what our speakers on health and wellness have been doing to create a healthier world.

A medical and diet expert from VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club, Dr. Ian Smith is teaming up with Coca-Cola in an attempt to combat obesity and promote a healthier life style. Created by Dr. Smith, the project, The Makeover Mile, brings a one-mile walk and health fair to seven cities including Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Dr. Smith’s goal is to increase education and awareness of this increasing issue saying, "Obesity and its related medical consequences are complicated issues. There is no single solution or problem solver, rather it's going to require various and numerous soldiers to win this difficult fight." In addition to appearance from the doctor, the program will feature free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, and a healthy cooking demonstration.

16th US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher is calling for more funding to AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP) in Georgia. Due to the economic crisis, ADAP programs have recently had their funding cut across the US. Since many HIV-positive patients are not able to afford their medication, there will be an increased amount of HIV-related deaths. It can cost up to $100,000 per hospitalized patient but only $12,000 for the life-saving medication. As Dr. Satcher points out, the funding is a win for everyone, saying, “we can save lives and save money."

Best-selling author and breast cancer survivor Kelly Corrigan recently gave back to her local hospital by planning the second annual Notes and Words Fundraiser. The event features local artists and benefits Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland, CA. Corrigan was drawn to lend a helping hand because of the care her daughter received for meningitis six years ago. Corrigan’s main goal for the event is to highlight wonderful care the hospital gives, saying, “I’m hoping we can give Children’s Hospital the love and attention it deserves.”

Gail Sheehy has been selected as the keynote speaker for the 2011 Alzheimer’s Educational Conference in West Palm Beach, FL. Sheehy is a best-selling author of 15 books on health and aging. Her most recent book, Passages in Caregiving: Turing Chaos Into Confidence, highlights her experiences caring for her husband for 17 years. The conference will feature experts in Alzheimer’s and related disorders. An advocate of embracing the aging process, Sheehy is sure to be a highlight of the conference.

Of course, this change offers significant challenges to traditional management approaches and to creating cohesive work teams. Here are some critical tips on hiring, managing, and building cohesive teams in this new paradigm:

* Not every employee will be successful within this more autonomous, highly self-disciplined environment. Make sure to hire employees who have demonstrated success working remotely—don’t assume that individuals who have been successful within the nine-to-five job will be successful in a more flexible work design.
* Utilize a highly valid and relible personality assessment such as the NEO-PI-R to select employees with personality traits indicative of self discipline and the ability to work autonomously.
* Managers must pay particular attention to setting crystal-clear goals and objectives, and spend time every day “checking in” and connecting with their virtual workforce. Employees must understand that while they are working on their own, they are not alone when it comes to support and supervision. Managers should know the work status of each employee at the end of every virtual day.
* Building virtual teams will be highly challenging. First, make sure that all employees clearly understand and align with the mission and vision of the organization and their team. Second, make sure that all employees understand the role they play and the interconnection of their work. Third, use web-based technologies and software (such as Basecamp by 37signals) or create a NING to keep your employees connected and updated with one another. Fourth, if at all possible hold a live team meeting event; if not, consider holding a virtual team building event.
* Recognizing employees for their contributions is both more important and challenging than doing so in a traditional office environment. When a team member goes above and beyond or reaches a milestone, consider sending out a tweet to the whole team. Employees working remotely still need to know that their work is appreciated and recognized!

"As I rapidly approach my 64th birthday and my 33-year anniversary with APB, I am struck at how much the lives of women have changed in every facet of my life. I am blessed to have an active mother who is 92 years young. She lived a somewhat traditional life, a young working girl who married and spent years taking care of the upbringing of two sons and the management of the household. She returned to the world of work after we were old enough and demonstrated to me how incredibly difficult it was to balance her responsibilities as a wife, mother, and working woman. As the feminist movement of the '60s took hold while I was in college, I believe that its mission of changing the hearts and minds of women and men began to take root with me. My first serious relationship was with a feminist activist who challenged my thinking on just about everything. "The women in my family have always worked. My great-great grandmother ran a bar out of her farmhouse in Russia; my great-aunt was the first woman in New York State to get a driver's license so she could sell the family's meats in surrounding towns; her sister, my grandmother, helped run a grocery storefront through the Depression. They all kept their families fed and clothed by working. I was taught early on that women have to work harder and fit more into each day than the men around them. As a mother of daughters I now marvel at the strides women have made in the workplace. There are careers open to my daughters that my grandmother could have never imagined. Unfortunately, the working women I know still struggle to find a balance between work and family life. Women's History Month is a time to reflect on how far we've come and how far we still have to go."

"My grandmother went to Radcliffe in the '30s and was working as a teacher when she and my grandfather decided to get married. It was during the Depression and married women weren't allowed to work because it was felt that jobs should go to the men, so she and my grandfather eloped. They kept it from everyone, including their families. She felt guilty after several months of hiding their secret, so decided to tell the principal, who was an old family friend. He fired her on the spot, even though there were only a few months left in the school year. She'd be amazed at how the world has changed and how many opportunities women have today, and proud that her granddaughter has met President Gorbachev and Archbishop Tutu and traveled to Hong Kong with Sarah Palin - but disappointed, and perhaps not at all surprised, that in many industries we are still paid less to do the same job as a man. I hope this will have changed by the time my daughter, her great-granddaughter, enters the workforce (in about a decade)."

Ken Jennings Makes Strong Showing Against Watson, the IBM Supercomputer

APB speaker and Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings recently appeared on Jeopardy! again – but this time his competition was not human, but rather an IBM “supercomputer.”

Watson, as the computer is named, was designed specifically to play the game of Jeopardy! The idea, which may at first seem strange, began when a few IBM researchers saw Jennings during his record breaking 74-game run on the show.

The special (which ran over three nights) ended with Watson at an astounding $77,147, crushing his human opponents. Despite this Jennings was able to keep his spot as the top human Jeopardy! player, beating out Brad Rutter with $24,000.

While some may see this as a loss for the humans, Jennings believes it should really be considered a victory, saying “That was Watson's role, as a symbol and product of human innovation and ingenuity. So my defeat at the hands of a machine has a happy ending, after all.”

The first book we recommend is written by one of the most influential and widely read intellectuals in the United States, Dr. Marable. I always take a moment on the third Monday in January to reflect on the life and words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For me, the words of Martin Luther King serve as an anchor, a reminder what is really important in life: the goals and dreams of people, like him, who strive every day to make the world a better place.

In his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, King said, "Let us not wallow in the valley of despair... Even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" His words are just as powerful and meaningful today as they were on that fateful day in 1963.

The End of an Era: Larry King announces he's leaving the show

After 25 years of captivating, in-depth interviewing on CNN,Larry King announced on June 29th that he will be ending the Larry King Live show. King took the show to the top with his candid, entertaining interviews of political leaders, activists and celebrities. Known for asking the questions that other journalists wouldn't dare, King won the respect and support of America. Recently the show was recognized by The Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running show in the same time slot and with the same host - after over 50 years of broadcasting, the Emmy Award-winning King deserves nothing less.

But now King prepares to leave his post, stating "it's time to hang up my nightly suspenders." He will stay with the show into the fall, marking its 25th anniversary on the air, when a new host will take over. He assures viewers that he will "still be a part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects."King plans on using his free time to enjoy his family and begin a new chapter in life.

CNN released a warm statement after the announcement:

Just as CNN redefined the news business, Larry King defined the art of the television interview. His candor, curiosity and compassion are legendary, and his ability to interview people from all walks of life-world leaders, celebrities and everyday people-has made him an icon. Personally, I can't recall a time when Larry King wasn't on CNN at 9pm. He has been a permanent fixture in many households for many years and I will be sad to see him go. Wes Moore on the Little Choices & their Big Impact

Wes Moore recently appeared on The Colbert Report to discuss his new book, The Other Wes Moore, shares the powerful life lessons it shares. Though typically over-the-top, this particular Colbert Report interview proved more serious with a light-hearted undertone, as Moore highlighted the importance of the small decisions we make and where they lead us later in life.

After learning of another man who shared his exact moniker, Moore probed deeper and found striking similarities: they were the same age, from the same Greater Baltimore area, and both raised by a single mother in a poor black neighborhood. How is it then, that Moore went on to become a Rhodes scholar, investment banker and decorated war veteran, while the other Wes Moore killed a cop and found his way to prison?

Moore shares his striking findings and thought provoking philosophies on the importance of the small choices we make in life. He imparts that though many disregard such minute decisions, such decisions in fact deeply influence our path and determine our destiny.

His interview got me thinking about the little decisions in my life that have led me to where I am today. What if I had hung out with different kids growing up? What if I went to a different college? What if I had taken a different job? Where would I have ended up? This game of "what if" not only gave me an appreciation of what I have and who I am today, but made me realize the impact my decisions have had in shaping my life, and more importantly the impact people around me have had.

Dr. Manning Marable Responds

I have written extensively on the first question. Probably the best statement I have written on race relations recently is my book, Living Black History (New York: Basic Civitas, 2006). My book argues that Americans have entered a new “racial domain” in the 21st century, of color blind racism. The Jim Crow sign reading white and colored have been taken down, but institutions like banks, real estate firms, employers, etc., continue to function in discriminatory ways. The great challenge is the effort to eliminate racial unfairness and to create opportunities and access for all Americans.

If I had to choose one issue holding back progress the most, I would focus on the criminal justice system. There are 2.4 million Americans currently in prison and about 45 percent of them are African-Americans. The majority of prisoners were non-violent offenders or people with drug problems, who should really not be in prison in the first place. We need to establish networks of community courts where non-violent crimes can be handled through probation and community service. We need to restore voting rights to former prisoners, who have lost their right to vote in several states.

I feel that we all have given the term "race" way too much lip service. My race has not held me back, my talent has not held me back. Timing, circumstances, hard work, self examination, discipline, self respect and my unwavering belief in meritocracy has provided me with some profound results. Yes. Predjudicial behavior still exists today, but I see it as a direct response to the reality that people of color are growing in rapid numbers around the globe and are becoming more competitive in every facet of life. These same people of color are also living next door to some people who have enjoyed centuries of aristocracy, oligarchy, plutocracy, cronyism and nepotism. In my opinion, it is this apparent "paradigm shift of power" that is raising the ire of those who have enjoyed the benefits of bigotry, economic disparity and the caste and class systems. Therefore, in my opinion, the color of our skin is no longer a real factor, just a clear sign that change is here to stay.

W. Ralph Eubanks Responds

An issue that is hampering progress on race relations is the lack of openness when confronting racial or racially tinged issues. In our cultural dialogue, Americans are quick to cast an issue in racial terms, while at the same time they are afraid of saying anything that may be construed as racist. This makes candid conversations about issues that involve race incredibly difficult.

The role of race in American culture has moved from blatant, obvious racism to a more subtle form that makes any underlying racial issues take on a shade of gray rather than black or white. There is a blurring line between race and ideology, combined with the desire for many to move beyond race and be totally "post racial." And this change from black and white racism to racism that is more difficult to discern is creating an evolution of the very nature of race relations in the United States, adding a new dimension to racial politics.

The new racial politics rarely mentions race, but leaves it thinly under the surface, often wrapped in conservative ideology to protect it from accusations of playing the race card. Along with ideology, some of the old techniques and coded speech are thrown in for good measure, appealing to conservative ideologues on one level and those with underlying concerns about the role of race in American society on another. All of this makes that post-racial ideal some Americans claim to want impossible to achieve.

We can never be post-racial. Yet the idea of a post-racial society that is free of the social burden of race persists and continues to create tension with those who embrace "the real America," a vision of the country that is rooted in the 1950s post-war ideal of a prosperous white middle class, with the social and historical complexities of race and class either ignored or repressed.

1-Of course, tomorrow always looks better than today but we have made much progress with race relations in America. There will always, I think, be hate crimes; whether for religious beliefs or economic envy. Even before there were differences Cain slew Abel so it is wrong but not unheard of that there might be envy of immigrants or fear of the differences of lifestyles. These are things we must continue to work on. Tolerance is a good word: so is Difference. We need to practice patience with ourselves and others.

2-I know we blame Pandora for opening the box Hera sent her but we have to remember Zeus was fooling around and it upset his wife. In other words, we all have a part to play in not putting hatred, jealousy and envy back in the box… that won't happen… but in recognizing that we all have these worse angels of our nature who whisper bad things to us, we must accept our fair share of responsibility. We need to close our ears and our hearts to those who bring out our worse. The main issue, as I see it, holding us back is the thinking that something can be eliminated. We cannot eliminate who we are, flawed life forms, but rather commit ourselves to the every day struggle of being better human beings. War and Prison are bad ideas because they imply an ultimate solution. We need to look further.

Julian Bond Responds

Race relations are changing and improving. At the same time, the euphoria that accompanied Obama's election - even among those who did not support him - has been dispelled as the Tea Partyers were revealed to harbor a significant percentage of racists and much of the opposition to the new president seems race-based, despite denials from the President's opponents.

In your opinion, what is one issue holding back progress? I hate these "one issue" questions because there is never "one issue", but you asked. Curiously, Obama's election became an occasion for many to announce that the goals of the moment for civil rights had all been won and as a consequence, we no longer needed the civil rights laws and civil rights organizations that made his nomination and election possible. A sort of "what's the problem?" attitude surfaced when complaints were aired - "we have a black president now". Add this attitude to the many Americans of all races and every economic status who were never involved in any meaningful way in fighting for civil rights and social justice, the universe of advocates has been lessened - we are curiously better off and worst off at the same time.

Sonia Manzano Responds

When I was a girl we wore half-slips called we enaguas. And since we were always trying to hike up our skirts higher than our parents intended us to wear them – our slips were always showing.

"Your slip is showing," we warned each other all day long.

Lately, the country's insidious racism has also been showing. It's been slipping out left and right. Especially right. Beginning with South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint criticizing President Obama's health care plan by saying, "We will break him." Break him? What exactly does "breaking" Obama mean and what does it have to do with the health plan? People "break" horses, and I've read that it was an expression uttered by slave masters. Hmmm.…was that a little racial slip of the tongue?

S'cuse me Senator, but I think your "slip" is showing.

Then there were the vitriolic town meetings against the health care plan. Not too many real details about the pros and cons of the plan were discussed at many of these events – but a lot of unfocused hatred was certainly expressed.

S'cuse me, incoherent, inarticulate, general public, but I think your collective "slip" is showing.

Then there was the stupid uproar from people who accused the President of wanting to brainwash students about socialism by telling them to stay in school. (It occurs to me that it is especially important for children with parents who make such connections to stay in school!) Was it really socialism people were afraid of? Or was it that old, can't-keep-it-down, racism bubbling up.

‘Scuse me folks, but your collective "slip" is showing.

But Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina caused the greatest big fat "slip" of racism when he pointed to the president and yelled, "You lie!" during the president's speech on health care. (Maureen Dowd columnist for the New York Times said, "…what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!") Mr. Wilson is intent of believing that health care will be given to immigrants regardless of the facts that very clearly say otherwise.

His spontaneous snarl reminds me of the famous picture of hatred taken in 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas of a school student snarling in the same frame of mind. Her target: A fellow high school student in a crisp white skirt and blouse trying to integrate the high school. When you look at this picture you wonder what this white student is so afraid of, and are aghast when you realize it is a black person.

Racism is a mindless, incoherent hatred, and we are seeing many examples of it lately. In the 1960's we were quick to accuse each other of it -- these days we have gone to the other extreme. Call it what you will -- socialism, communism, a rose. When there is this much intense inarticulate rage (not a difference of opinion or a different set of ideas, much less a civil debate directed at a man who holds the most powerful position in the world -- it's racism.

And that makes me afraid.

Leroy Chiao Responds

One of the under appreciated aspects of the space program has been the positive effect on race relations. People from varied races and ethnicites have been united on the International Space Station (ISS), in the name of science and exploration. There is still much progress to be made, but arguably, a very visible, international project, like the ISS has furthered matters.

What is holding back progress? Human nature. All cultures are suspicious of others. What separates us from other animals, is that we have the intellect to move beyond these suspicions. The key of course, is education and personal experiences. In this day and age, one cannot be an isolationist, much less a racist, and expect to succeed. Everyone should travel to other countries, and experience the richness of other cultures and races. This will help progress, immensely. It is a matter of people convincing themselves, that the old ways are obsolete.

What South Hadley Is & IS NOT About

Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes, was taken aback by the recent New York Times article entitled "The Myth of Mean Girls."

Calling "this panic is a hoax," the article points to falling numbers in major crime indexes as an indicator that violence amongst girls is not a pervasive issue. However, as Rosalind argues, these indexes have little to do with the heart of the issue.

Here's what the South Hadley case IS NOT about:

Perpetuating a myth that there is an increase of violent girls.
Girls murdering other girls on the streets.
Charging girls in this case with violent crimes. Instead, they were charged with stalking, harassment, and violation of another's civil rights.

Here's what it is about:

Children doubting that if they are harassed, demeaned, or degraded that adults can effectively address the problem.
Teachers not having the skills, training, or faith in their administrators to know what to do when they see students degrading other students.
Defining and maintaining our ethical standards towards one another.

Equally troubling is the regressive analysis of the authors, who appear to state that the only true definition of cruel behavior is physical violence.

That is, if you don't have a bruise you can show me, then your experience doesn't matter. This is exactly the same argument that domestic violence advocates have argued against for years—and exactly the same rationalization that abusers have used to get away with their inhumane treatment of others.

Based on this theory, any behavior short of a physical attack is dismissed as a "myth" or "hoax." But we all know that a physical altercation between people doesn't occur without a build-up that begins with smaller indignities.

So let’s go back to the beginning. Why did those girls think they had the right to treat Pheobe the way they did? Why were they so confident that they could bully her in front of school faculty without fear of punishment? These are the questions that reveal the true underlying problem. Adults must understand cruelty and bullying for the threat they are to individual safety, the learning environment, and the overall integrity of the school culture. So while it's commendable that violent crime among girls has decreased, that fact isn’t relevant to teaching children that civil society is founded on the rights and responsibilities of all people to be treated with dignity. This is not in impossible goal to achieve but it requires all of us to stop blaming each other, dismissing the issue, and do right by the children in our lives.

How to Talk to Your Child About Cyberbullying

Phoebe’s death – and an explosion in cyberbullying worldwide – are telegraphing an emergency message to schools and families: we must take action now. Yet the vast majority of schools decline to intervene with real consequences when cyberbullying incidents occur.

Cyberbullying has intensified the experience of getting bullied by literally shattering the walls between school and home. There is no escape. As Parry Aftab has said, cyberbullying follows you everywhere: home, summer camp, to Grandma’s house.

With a recent study showing that youth spend nearly every waking moment with a device in their hands, I want to share some of my advice to parents on how to talk with your child about cyberbullying and digital citizenship. If you haven’t had this conversation, or one like it, do not pass go. The time is now.

Begin with a discussion. Raise the issue by talking about what you’ve heard or read. “It seems like cyberbullying is becoming a big deal lately.” Mention Phoebe’s suicide. Ask your child what she’s seen.

Let her know you’re there if she’s in trouble, no matter what – even if she’s partly responsible for a situation. Assure her that you’ll keep a problem between you when you can, and that you’ll be open to discussing it if she doesn’t want you to intervene (never promise that you won’t intervene). Your bottom line: this is a serious issue, and if she’s in trouble, you don’t want her to be alone, no matter what.

Ensure her cell phone and computer have screen locks that are password protected. Find other preventative steps you can take to keep your child safe here.

Let her know your policy on cyberbullying. For example: “I want to make sure we’re both clear on some rules around your use of technology. I expect you to conduct yourself online the same way you do in real life. That means making sure you treat people with kindness and respect at all times.”

Talk about some examples of what breaking the rules might look like. Use some of what you heard in the opening discussion you had to get specific about what’s not okay. Make sure she understands she is expected to steer clear of the following behaviors: She is expected not to use another person’s cell phone or computer without his/her permission; to circulate embarrassing photographs or video about another person; to forward hurtful or embarrassing messages or media; to use anonymous or unrecognizable screen names to communicate; to use foul or abusive language that could embarrass or hurt others. You may want to create an ethical Internet use contract together. See a sample here.

Explain your stance. Don’t just say “no;” explain why. Use the conversation as an opportunity to talk about the values that are important to you and your family: respect, kindness, integrity, and compassion.

Let her know technology is a privilege. “Being able to have a phone or computer is no different from being able to drive a car. When you get your license, it’s because you’ve proven you’re mature enough to follow rules and take others into consideration. The same will be true for tech use. If you aren’t mature enough to act with respect, you will lose your access.”

Emphasize the positive: “I see you as a person with enormous kindness, integrity and respect for others. I expect you to be that same person when you’re using an electronic device.

It’s never too early to have this conversation. Talk to your kids about cyberbullying, and start talking to school officials about getting involved. South Hadley High School began every day last week with a moment of silence to remember Phoebe. Silence is the last thing we need on this issue. Let’s not let Phoebe die in vain.

Encourage empathy. Talk with your kids about what Phoebe may have been feeling when she was being bullied. Many are now identifying with Phoebe in death. By considering her experience before she died, kids can identify with her in life — and reflect on behaviors and situations they have real power to change.

Speakers Weigh In
As someone who recently journeyed to the other end of their mid-20s, I can still remember when the cell phone was simply a helpful but unnecessary gadget. However, when I recently went out of the country for vacation and left my phone behind (I definitely wasn't going to pay roaming fees) I realized how lost I felt without it, and it made me wonder how I'd lived without one my whole childhood.

Unlike me, today's teenagers have never known life without a cell phone, and social media sites are poised to follow that same path. These sites, which I first saw when today's high school freshmen were leaving kindergarten, are quickly becoming kids' main communication tool. Providing people with the power to instantly reach everyone they know with a single click of the mouse, online communications represent a massive cultural shift in how children relate to each other. This makes it more important than ever for parents and educators to be actively aware of the realities and dangers of kids being "wired" 24/7.

When I read the tragic story of Phoebe Prince's suicide, and the day-to-day harassment she dealt with in a school system right here in Massachusetts, I couldn't imagine the pain and sense of personal violation she must have felt when she had nowhere safe to turn. Kevin Cullen of The Boston Globe, wrote, "They followed her. She had no quarter. They made it torture for her to come to school every day because the insults and the intimidation were relentless," and they continued online via social media sites and text messages, effectively making Prince feel threatened and abused at all times, including where she was supposed to be the safest, her home.

According to the National Crime Prevention Center, 40% of kids with internet access have reported being bullied online, but only 10% of kids who were bullied reported the incidents to their parents. Bullying can now happen silently inside the home, making identification and intervention increasingly difficult for adults.

The American Program Bureau, in an effort to raise awareness of this growing issue, has reached out to our expert speakers on bullying for their thoughts on "cyber-bullying" and contemporary forms of peer aggression.
